Comparing the Hydrological Response of Forested Headwaters (Unregulated and Regulated with Check Dams) under Mediterranean Semi-Arid Conditions

چکیده
This study has evaluated the runoff and erosion rates in torrents of Southern Italy, two forested headwaters with very similar climatic, hydrological geomorphological characteristics; one headwater, 15 check dams were installed mid-1950s, while other is not regulated engineering works. To this aim, variables have been modeled over years after dam installation using HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System) model coupled to MUSLE (Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation) equation. The simulations shown that played a significant role reducing surface compared unregulated torrent; both catchments, well-developed forest cover determined low coefficients (lower than 0.3%) scarce generation capacity. Additionally, reduction peak flow due was significant, on average ?7.4% headwater. Check retained sediments for about 8–10 their installation, by 35%, although soil loss much lower tolerance limit catchments. After sediment retention capacity wedge depleted, yield torrent even higher (by 20%) catchment. Overall, use as catchment management strategy under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions should be considered caution, since structures could ineffective reduce water flows during floods or, some cases, may increase rates.

Simulation of the catchments hydrological processes in arid, semi-arid and semi-humid areas
Hydrological processes and their spatial distribution directly are relevant to climate, topography, geology, and land use in the watershed. Therefore, use of a model whit integrity and high performance for simulating the process in deferent watersheds is very important. In this study was assessment performance of semi-distributed SWAT model in simulating hydrology processes in three watersheds ...
متن کاملImpacts of different tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yield under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions
Effects of six tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yields were evaluated for a clay soil (Typic Haploxererts) under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions in a three year study (2006-2009). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized-block with three replications. Treatments were: conventional tillage with residue incorporated (CT1), conventional tillage wi...
متن کاملHydrological balance of two Mediterranean forested catchments ( Prades , northeast Spain )
Precipitation and discharge have been measured for several years in two small forested catchments located in the Mediterranean area of Spain. Actual évapotranspiration has been calculated as the difference between annual precipitation and discharge. Results show that: (a) most of the precipitation is evaporated rather than lost by streamflow, even in the most humid years; (b) there is a high in...

The seasonal changes of leaf physiological traits and its relationship with abiotic factors (photosynthetic active radiation-PAR, leaf temperature-Tleaf, air temperature-Tair, Tleaf - Tair- ΔT) were studied on sugar beets grown under the semi-arid conditions of central Greece. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) cv Rizor was established in a Randomised Complete Block design experiment for two years (...
متن کاملRangeland management and animal production sustainability under arid and semi arid conditions: Egypt overview
Livestock fodder needs in nearly all developing countries now exceed the sustainable yield of rangelands and other forage resources. In Africa, overgrazing has reduced range productivity virtually everywhere. It is important to provide animals with adequate nutrition to ensure the high productive and reproductive performance. Meanwhile, it is necessary to avoid the deterioration of the pasturel...
